Built-in storage needs the Mac itself
From 2018 on, MacBook storage is built in and encrypted, so the files can’t be moved to another machine. We recover them through the Mac itself, here in Ithaca.
Told it needs a new logic board? A replacement comes with empty storage. Recover the files first.

Often, yes. The storage is usually fine even when the Mac is dead.
Can you recover data from a water damaged MacBook?
Often, if it reaches us soon. Don’t charge it or turn it on. Ship it as it is.
Do you recover M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks?
Yes. Newer MacBooks with built-in storage, T2 and Apple silicon, are what we focus on.
My MacBook needs a new logic board. Can I still get my files?
Yes, if the replacement has not been done yet. A replacement comes with empty storage, so recover the files first.
Do you need my password?
Usually, yes. On newer MacBooks the login password unlocks the files. It is used only for your recovery.
